Let's assume you're an impatient asshole like me, who just wants to blast through one match to the next, unlocking fighters, new areas of the map, and see the story-mode cutscenes. However, in practice, World of Light is unforgivingly tedious, and almost everything about its design actively seems to take away from any fun that you could be having playing it. If I had been some high-up executive overseeing production on this game, I 100% would have greenlit the idea of "World of Light" immediately. I struggle to imagine a more economical, smart, and "ultimate" way to make this story mode a more impressive celebration of not just nintendo games, but ALL video games. The whole concept of "spirits" possessing puppet fighters and challenging you to a huge variety of matches with different conditions and rules is brilliant, and totally in line with the "Everyone is Here!" motif. I wish I didn't feel this way, because in theory, it's a brilliant idea. World of Light is tedious, convoluted, unengaging, frustrating, and absolutely zero fun to play. It feels weird to write such a cynical and mean post about a game I love and feel so incredibly lucky to be able to play, but here we are.
